In our previous post we have learned much about the types of bulk carriers. However in practice all one needs to know is always less, than they write in books. Thus, this article is here to show you all you need to know about classification of bulk carriers according to their size.
- Small – DW < 10,000 t
- Handysize – 10,000 t < DW < 35,000 t
- Handymax – 35,000 t < DW < 50,000 t
- Supramax – 50,000 t ≤ DW < 60,000 t - these vessels are often designed to meet Panama Canal restrictions with B ≤ 32.24 m (see Panamax type description), also fitted with cranes for self loading and discharging
- Panamax – B ≤ 32.24 m, 60,000 < DW < 80,000 t - the maximum size of vessel (in breadth) for passing the Panama Canal
- Capesize – 80,000 t < DW < 200,000 t - ships larger than Panamax or Suezmax (they can not cross the canals), they use the route of Cape Horn or the route of the Cape of Good Hope to sail between oceans
- Very Large Bulk Carrier – DW > 200,000 t
